Opinion: Are we going to spend the whole summer just scrolling?

Of course, there are many arguments in favour of AI tools. But why do we suddenly seem to have stopped believing that we can still do so much on our own? Come up with ideas, and share them with real people – colleagues, like-minded individuals or opponents. After all, that’s what works, - Tuleviku Meedia founder Julia Rodina is writing in her opinion piece.

A sense of belonging, the ability to manage conflicts constructively, an understanding of who I am amongst all these billions of people on the planet, and the exchange of ideas and experiences – these are all difficult to cultivate through ChatGPT, SMS or Zoom calls. These are merely substitutes for real communication, which certainly proved a lifeline during the pandemic, but like any stopgap measure, they cannot replace basic needs in the long term.

It’s a bit scary to even think about it: what will the traditional school essay ‘How I Spent My Summer’ be about now?

What sort of stories will we have accumulated over the course of our lives if most of our time is taken up by passively consuming content and chatting with virtual interlocutors? Of course, in our old age we’ll be able to recount old memes, but why bother when we can just send a screenshot?
